Zahara Backer Keilim Mikvah

Open 24/6 with outdoor night lighting. The door is through the fence to the left of the Shul's main entrance.

Constructed in memory of Zahara Backer, a beloved mother and wife of our community who succumbed to illness.

We thank Richard Greenfield for his diligence and efforts on a regular basis in upgrading the beauty and functionality of the Zahara Backer Kelim Mikvah. Special appreciation to Richard for physically replacing the heavy metal cover with a coated marine vinyl insulated lightweight cover!

Philosophy

Congregation Ohev Shalom was founded with the express purpose of exposing — not imposing the timeless truths of our beautiful heritage to our fellow Jews.

We endeavor to create a warm and non-intimidating environment based on Torah tradition; a place where Jews of all backgrounds feel at home.

Rabbi Aryeh Rodin

Rabbi Aryeh Rodin is a native of Washington, D.C., and received his ordination from the Rabbinical Seminary of America (Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim) in New York City under the tutelage of HaRav Alter Chanoch Henach Leibowitz, ZT”L.

Rabbi Rodin’s warmth and sincerity has made him a favorite in Dallas for almost 30 years. He serves as the Jewish Chaplain at Medical City Dallas Hospital. He lectures at synagogues nationwide and is featured periodically in the Jewish Press.

Henny Rodin, the quintessential Rebbetzin, Mother, Bubbie, and best friend of most of the ladies at Ohev Shalom, is constantly working in the background, not only as “backup” for the Rabbi, but also spearheading Sisterhood events, community Shabbos luncheons, and holiday events. Her home has been open to members and newcomers alike, and many memorable Shabbos and holiday meals at her home have been the impetus to many of our members to return to their Jewish roots.

Rabbi and Henny are the proud parents of 8 children, all of whom have gone on to further Torah studies at yeshivas across the country. They are also proud grandparents.

History

In August 1986, Rabbi Aryeh and Henny Rodin moved to Far North Dallas to start an Orthodox community and Torah outreach center. For sixteen months, Shabbos services and Torah classes were held in the Rodin’s living room. Slowly, a handful of people started to attend regularly. Realizing that growth would be impossible in such tight quarters, this fledgling group rented space from a local shopping center to heighten its visibility, and ultimately, its viability.

As the congregation continued to grow, Rabbi and Henny approached a number of qualified people to become Ohev Shalom’s first board of directors. In 1992, Ohev Shalom purchased the 1 acre property that it now occupies at the corner of Hillcrest Road and McCallum Blvd. A three-step building construction and renovation program was implemented over time to continually meet the needs of its growing membership.
